How did I miss the Day of the Donut?

by sugargeek on April 17, 2008

I’m sad to say I missed a major sugar event. April 16 (yesterday) was Day of the Donut, observed by flickr members around the world. Donut/doughnut shop meet-ups were held in cities across the globe, from Washington DC to Paris to Bahrain. Members gathered at their local bakeries, or celebrated alone with their favorite glazed, sprinkled, and frosted dough circles, in a show of international fellowship. When you think about it, the donut is a perfect symbol of friendship. It’s round and sweet, like a delicious hug!

San Francisco members of the We Demand Donuts flickr group were especially lucky, because each of them received a free donut from flickr management-type guy, Matthew Rothenberg. Rothenberg even posted photos of the receipts for the 12 dozen donuts he bought for the group. The group had been hoping to make it to 20,000 members before the big day, in order to get their free donuts, but Rothenberg rewarded their efforts even though they fell short of their goal.

Donuts, making friends out of strangers. To quote Homer Simpson, “Donuts. Is there anything they can’t do?”

I love donuts and coffee in the morning, specially if the boss is the one bringing it in. The sugar gives me a boost to stop the yawning, keeps my eyes open, quiets the growly stomach, and of course, gets me focus on the job.

I like doughnuts. Those English ones.. with jam inside! Mmmm…
I used to work in a doughnut shop. That pretty much explained it. :P

Wow, I didn’t even know that there was an international day for doughnuts! I’m defenitely look out for it next year. There’s nothing quite like a nice fresh doughnut with coffee to either start my day or for a simple snack to hit the sopt!

Your picture reminds me why I avoided such a day. LOL. Too much temptation for me.

How could I have missed this? I must put this day on my calendar. It is a perfect way to mark the passing of dreaded “Tax Day”. I’ve been working on trying to lose weight and donuts (sugar in general) is one of my biggest weaknesses. Maybe next year I can have a donut on “Donut Day” in celebration of a new body!!!

Thanks, everybody. Seriously, who doesn’t like donuts? I don’t know anyone who can pass up a sweet piece of fried dough. I love all donuts, whether they’re holes, circles, bars, twists, filled, cake, raised, beignets, whatever. Seriously, they just go down too easily, and I can’t stop myself. :-)
