A beautiful example of Japanese tai-yaki

by sugargeek on March 31, 2008

This is a Japanese treat, called tai-yaki. It is like a waffle, made in the shape of a bream, and filled with sweet bean paste. It might not look or sound sweet, but it is! I remember having this when I visited Japan, and I have not seen one in 20 years. When I found this photo, it brought back vivid memories of those trips with my family. I could almost taste and smell the tai-yaki!

Many thanks to Yoshiko for sharing her beautiful photograph with us!

Hiya!
Taiyaki are more pancakes than waffles for the Japanese.
They usually have premixes for the batter. Much softer than a pancake. And there is special pancake maker for Taiyaki (which means Happiness).
They are usually in the shape of Koi fish which signifies good luck.
The fillings can vary from the traditional Azuki (Red Bean), Chocolate, Custard, Strawberry and Maccha Azuki (Green tea & Red Bean)!
I love Taiyaki!! I eat all the leftovers in my shop! Hahah:)

Either way they sound delicious, I wonder if specialty Japanese restaurants/shops might sell them in the US?

According to my post, Taiyaki is more of a street stall. You can check out your local restaurants but my bet is on the smaller stalls.
And yes, those chewy fish tastes so good when piping hot. And those with Cream Cheese are my favourites. To die for!!! MMM…

@Sherxr, all of those flavors sound scrumptious! I’ve only had the azuki filling. You have a shop that makes tai-yaki? I may have to find a tai-yaki maker so I can do them at home. I haven’t been to Japan in such a long time, and there aren’t many places to get good Japanese food here in Indiana. Definitely no street stalls!

@Ada, let me know if you find a good place!

Hello Sugargeek. The real professional Taiyaki makers are only available in Japan. They are really heavy so the taiyaki are basically cooked to a crisp in a short time.
You can get those homemade ones. But definitely won’t be better. :P
I don’t own the shop dear, I was running it for my boss. :)
